Is a Stage 1 remap safe?
Yes, when the file stays within the limits of the standard parts, which is what Stage 1 means. The engine, turbo, clutch and gearbox were built with headroom the manufacturer chose not to use. A Stage 1 remap uses some of it. A remap that uses all of it is a different product, whatever it is called.

A Stage 1 remap changes the software in the engine ECU and nothing else. It raises boost, adjusts fuelling and injection timing and lifts the torque limiters, all within what the standard turbo, injectors, clutch, gearbox and cooling system were designed to take. The manufacturer set those limits for every market, every fuel grade and every driver at once, which is why there is room in them. A properly written Stage 1 file takes some of that room and leaves the rest.
What makes it safe
Three things, and all three are things you can ask about before you book.
The file is written for your exact engine and software version. Not a generic file for a 2.0 diesel, but one developed for that ECU, that software number and that hardware. Our files come from JF Automotive, who develop them on a 2,000bhp rolling road in Maidstone, engine by engine, and test them there before they go into the catalogue. When you put your registration in on this site, the figures you see are that catalogue's, not an estimate.
The gains are set where the parts are comfortable, not where they give up. A diesel turbo has a boost ceiling, a clutch has a torque figure it will hold, and a DSG has a torque limit written into its own software. A Stage 1 file sits inside all of them. That is why a Stage 1 on a 190bhp 320d gives 220bhp and 440Nm rather than 260 and 520. The second set of numbers is available, but it is not Stage 1.
The car is checked before and after. A fault scan before the remap finds the sensor that was already failing, the DPF that was already loading, the injector that was already tired. Remapping a car with an existing fault does not make the fault, but it does make it show up sooner. A scan afterwards proves nothing new has appeared. Both are part of every job we do.
What an unsafe remap looks like
It is usually sold on the headline figure. It promises the maximum number for the engine, it is priced low, and it is done from a generic map with the boost and torque limiters simply raised until the numbers look good. On a dyno for ten minutes it works. On a motorway in August with the air conditioning on, it is the file that cooks a turbo or takes a clutch out. The tell is that nobody can show you the figures for your car before you book, because they do not have them.
What it does to the engine over time
A Stage 1 remap raises the load on the engine when you ask for it and leaves it alone when you do not. Cruising at 70 with a Stage 1 file, the engine is doing exactly what it did before. The extra is there for overtaking and pulling away, which is a small fraction of most driving. Wear follows load, so a car driven the same way after a remap wears much as it did before; a car driven harder because it can now be driven harder wears faster, and that is the driver rather than the file.
Servicing matters more, not less. Oil and filter changes on time, and on a diesel, journeys long enough for the DPF to regenerate. The remap does not change those needs; it just makes them matter more.
If you are still not sure
Put your registration in and look at the figures. If the gain looks modest against what a forum promised, that is the point. Then ask what happens if you do not like it. With us, you have fourteen days to say so, we put the original file back on one visit, and the remap is refunded in full. If nothing was wrong with the tune, that visit is a flat £50. A remap that comes with that offer is one the people selling it are confident in.
What matters, in three lines
Standard hardware, more from it
Software only, kept inside the limits of the turbo, clutch, gearbox and cooling the car came with. Anything that needs a part changed is Stage 2 or beyond.
Can you show me my figures first?
A tuner with a file for your engine can. One working from a generic map cannot. Ours are shown when you enter your registration, before you speak to anyone.
Fourteen days, original file kept
Change your mind and the car goes back exactly as it was on one visit, with the remap refunded. The original file is stored the day it is read.
Related questions
Will a remap shorten my engine's life?
Not if it is a Stage 1 file written for the engine and the car is driven the way it was driven before. Wear follows load, and a Stage 1 remap only adds load when you ask for it. A file pushed to the edge of what the components can take, or a car driven much harder because it now can be, is a different matter, and that comes down to the driver and the tuner rather than the idea of remapping.
Is a diesel or a petrol safer to remap?
Both are fine at Stage 1. Turbo diesels tend to give the larger torque gain and are the bulk of what we do; turbo petrols give a smoother, wider gain. A naturally aspirated petrol gains little from software alone and we will say so rather than sell you a remap that you would not feel.
Can a remap be detected by a dealer?
A dealer can compare the software in the ECU with what they expect, and some do. We keep your original file and will put the car back to standard before a dealer visit if you ask. If the car is under manufacturer warranty, read this first.
Does the fuel I use matter after a remap?
Use what the manufacturer specifies. A Stage 1 file is written for the standard fuel grade, so nothing changes. Premium diesel and petrol will not harm it and may run slightly cleaner, but the file does not depend on them.
