How much does a remap cost?

A Stage 1 remap from Remaps UK is from £245, done at your home or work, with a fault scan before and after, your original file kept and fourteen days to change your mind. Every job is quoted on the car, so you get one fixed figure before you book and it does not change on the driveway.

What the market charges

In September 2026 we looked at what independent mobile and workshop tuners across Kent, East Sussex, Essex, Surrey and London were quoting for a Stage 1 remap on an ordinary turbo diesel. Most were between £250 and £300. The very cheap end, under £200, was generic files with no figures shown. The franchise tuning brands and the manufacturer-approved schemes were £400 and up, sometimes well up.

The price to be suspicious of is the one that is the same for every car. A three-cylinder hatchback and a twin-turbo estate are not the same file or the same hour, and a tuner who charges them the same is not pricing the work.

What moves the price

The ECU. Most engine ECUs can be read and written through the diagnostic socket in the footwell, and that is the job that takes an hour on the driveway. Some, mostly on newer cars, are locked and have to come out of the car to be read on the bench, as in the photograph on our mobile remapping page. That is more time and a more careful job, and it costs more. You will be told which yours is when you get your price.

What else is being done. A gearbox remap is a second ECU and a second file. An AdBlue, DPF or EGR delete is priced from the registration like a remap. A repair on any of those is done and priced at JF Automotive in Maidstone once the car is on the ramp. An economy remap is the same work as a performance remap and costs the same.

What a fixed price includes with us

You see the figures for your car before you book, free. You get a full fault scan before the remap and another after. The original file is read and stored, so the car can go back exactly as it was. The new file is written, the car is road tested, and a fully insured engineer does all of it. You have fourteen days to change your mind, refunded in full when the original goes back on.

The two extras to ask any tuner about

What if I want it removed? Returning the car to standard takes one visit, whenever you like, because we keep the original file. Inside the fourteen days, if nothing is wrong with the file itself, that visit is a flat £50 and the remap is refunded in full.

What if a dealer update overwrites it? It can happen at a service. Reloading the file needs a visit and carries a call-out charge starting at £50 depending on where you are. Tell the dealer the car is remapped before any update and they will usually leave the engine software alone.

Is it worth it?

Put your registration in and look at the figures before you decide. On a 190bhp BMW 320d the catalogue says 220bhp and 440Nm, which is a car that pulls from lower down and overtakes with less planning, from £245. On a small naturally aspirated petrol the gain is a few horsepower and we will tell you to keep your money. The figures answer the question, and they are free to look at.
